How a Finnish speaker may express that they need to leave...

Here are a few ways to express in Finnish (when there’s a slight pause in the conversation…) that you have to get going. Some are longer, some are shorter. Some are straighforward, some less so. Take it with a pinch of salt - the context matters, obviusly - but Finns really do say a lot with very few words sometimes!

What a Finn might say when they’re trying to finish a conversation and leave.

= Something along the lines of “I going to have to make a move now…

 

= “Oh, wow, it’s late…“ or more like “I didn’t realise it was that late…” when you consider the clitic -kin.

 

This one is really hard to translate… it’s close to “Ok, so…” and it can be followed by “I’ll catch you later then!” or similar…

 

= “Yep…” or “Right…
